good power point Dr. Simon! Really helpful. I was looking for things in these websites that made them different from each other. Those were the things I tried to note. Well, that and the things that just caught my eye!
- music library association- I was really impressed with their pre-conference workshops, they sounded wonderful. The rates look pretty standard ($35 for a student). It sounds like great fun, I just have no musical talent. Do you think I should join anyway, just for interest? Do they frown on that?
- semla- Southeast Chapter of the Music Library Association. Quite obviously, the regional aspect makes this one interesting. Wonderful in fact. Do they have workshops at all? The site does not mention any. Does say that it is non profit.
- International Computer Music Association- They have international conferences and seem to be very globally diverse. They do sponsored research, which I would like to know more about and have been around since 1974. That seems to me to have been rather early days for computer music. Good for them for spotting the potential so early! They are also non profit.
- IAML- International Association of Music Libraries. They promote international exchange and lending. They support the development for cataloging preservation and availability of music materials. And they promote professional education and training. They seem really well put together. Very much like the MLA, just on a global scale. I will be spending some more time on this site, this is some very interesting stuff!
- musicipedia- Open Music Encyclopedia. Interesting that they say they were inspired by wiki. Unfortunately, this neat stuff is beyond me. I know nothing about the composition or makeup of music at all, I only know what I like. I have always wished to have some talent, but my talents lie elsewhere.

The first two weeks...
The first few weeks of this course have been an introduction for me into some of the terms and current topics of the subject of music informatics.
the first website for review is:
- music library association- What catches my eye here is the reasonable searching for rights holders. Also comparisons of different bibliographic control systems as they apply to music (a hot topic as it turns out).
- rilm- The International Society for Music Information Retrieval. This deals with the interpretation and classicfication of genre (which I find very interesting). Being non musical (sadly) that is one area that I can at least understand if not personally relate to.
Music visualization is also discussed and I read some conference notes, including one that had Thomas Dolby as one of the speakers with something called data sonification that he has been working on. I would like to understand it more...
- ismir- this is the International Society for Music Information Retrieval. There is nothing on this website that tells me clearly who they are, what they want, and what they do. Did not like it.
The textbook was difficult for me this week. It is just rather dry and I'm trying to follow it, and most of it seems like common sense, but I don't feel that I really have it yet.
